Boxing Gloves Weight Guide
Which Boxing Glove Weight Should I Choose?
Choose your boxing glove weight based on how you train, your bodyweight and your gym's rules. The weight in oz (ounces) describes the glove's weight, not your hand size.
| Bodyweight | Bag & Pads | Sparring* |
|---|---|---|
| Under 55 kg | 10 oz | 14–16 oz* |
| 55–70 kg | 10–12 oz | 16 oz* |
| 70–85 kg | 12–14 oz | 16 oz* |
| Over 85 kg | 14–16 oz | 16 oz or heavier* |
*General starting points, not universal rules. Always follow your coach's or gym's sparring requirements. Glove padding, model and fit matter as much as the oz rating. A 16 oz glove does not automatically make sparring safe.
What do the weights mean?
- 10 oz: lighter bag and pad training.
- 12 oz: general bag and pad training.
- 14 oz: heavier training gloves; some gyms permit them for lighter sparring.
- 16 oz: commonly requested for adult sparring, subject to gym approval.
Quick tips
Training with a partner? Ask your coach which glove weight and model are permitted before buying.
Between two weights? Consider your main use: lighter for bag/pads, heavier for partner drills if approved.
Wearing hand wraps? Check that the glove fits comfortably with your wraps; oz alone does not determine fit.
